Worried that your attic’s insulation needs to be replaced?  Like many things in your house, your insulation will eventually wear out.   Replacing your attic’s insulation will reduce energy costs and keep your house properly heated or cooled.

Here are several signs that you may need to replace your attic’s insulation:

Your heating and cooling bills change: In most cases, this will be the first sign that you may need to replace your attic’s insulation.  Make sure to compare this year’s energy bill with last year.  If your energy costs went up and there is no other explanation for the increase (such as a change in energy prices), then your attic’s insulation may need to be replaced.

Damage to your existing insulation: Another sign that you may need to replace your attic’s insulation comes from the condition of your insulation.  Check your insulation regularly for any problems.  Is the insulation moldy or wet?  Is it damaged?  Are parts of the insulation missing?  If your insulation has seen better days, it may need to be replaced.

Rodent or bug infestation: Do you have a problem with pests in your attic?  Are they living in your insulation or have they damaged it?  If you have pest issues, your insulation may be compromised.  After you call the exterminator, make sure you check your insulation for damage.

Your house has drafts: Do you have drafts in your house even when all the doors and windows are closed?  Drafts are a sign that there is an air leak in your house, which can be due to an improperly insulated attic.

Your indoor temperature constantly changes: Similar to drafts, if your indoor temperature changes often, it may be a sign that your insulation isn’t working.
