Fall is here, and if you’re a homeowner, you know it’s time to clean your gutters. Going up a ladder? Since you’re up there anyway, it’s an excellent time to inspect your roof for much-needed repairs.
Why roof repairs?
Roof repairs can sneak up on even the most careful homeowner. It’s never a good time to experience roofing problems, but winter brings a lot of opportunity for roof damage. Even if the issue seems minor, like a small draft or leak, it can cost you in higher heating bills. Worse, snow and ice contribute to water damage, which adds up over time. Leaks in your roof now can lead to roof rot and costlier repairs down the line. Goes without saying: you need to check your roof.
How often do I need to inspect my roof?
Roof inspections should be performed twice a year: once in the spring and again in the fall. You’re looking for snow and ice damage in the spring, and storm damage from the summer in the fall. You can begin a preliminary roof inspection from the ground. Look for noticeable trouble spots like moss, leaves, tree branches, and other debris. While you’re up cleaning your gutters, take a closer look for out-of-place shingles and damage to flashing around our chimney or vents. These are metal materials that repel rainwater. Many of them are located near your gutters.

If you’ve never inspected your own roof before, or notice damage to your roof, call in the professionals. DIY repairs could actually make the problem worse. Plus, regular preventative maintenance and small repairs now are cost-saving, and protect the literal roof over your head!
