Over time, your window screens face wear and tear. Sometimes, the damage is obvious, like if your screen gets torn. Rust can also be a sign that it\u2019s time for new window screens. Other times, a weathered or worn screen can be hard to spot. A faded screen might not look broken, but since it\u2019s weathered, it\u2019s probably time to replace your window screens before they break.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s no set timeframe on when you should replace your window screens. A good rule of thumb is every ten years. This can vary depending on the quality of your window screens and how much of a beating they can withstand.<\/p>\n

Measuring the width<\/h4>\n

Measuring your window screens requires a pen, paper, and a measuring tape. You\u2019ll need to carefully remove the screen before proceeding.<\/p>\n

For the width, sometimes called the L-channel, measure from left to right at the top and record the measurement. Repeat the process when you\u2019re measuring the top and the bottom to ensure an accurate measurement (measure twice, record once). Take the shorter measurement down and subtract 1\/8 inch. That\u2019s typically your window screen size.<\/p>\n

Measuring the height<\/h4>\n

Then, measure the height, sometimes called the U-channel. Like the width, you\u2019re going to measure both sides in case they\u2019re not perfectly symmetrical. Sometimes, that happens due to wear and tear and warping that comes with time. Again, you\u2019re going to take the lower measurement an subtract 1\/8 inch. Subtract a quarter inch if you\u2019re having hardware installed.<\/p>\n

For the length, do NOT measure from channel to channel or you\u2019ll come up with the wrong size, and your replacement screen will be too big to fit. Measure from the edge of the inside of one channel to a ridge so you can slide your new screen in. This is an industry standard.<\/p>\n
