As the weather gets colder, it\u2019s more important than ever to check your windows. Your windows insulate your home from the elements and keep out drafts. Having well-insulated windows doesn\u2019t just keep your home at a comfortable temperature. It also helps you save money on your energy bills since it takes less energy to heat or cool your home.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re worried your windows are less than stellar, or aren\u2019t insulating your home like they should, here are a few signs to check for before winter arrives.<\/p>\n

1. Check the caulking<\/h4>\n

The caulking is what keeps your windows snug in place and keep drafts out of your home. Old, cracking, and busted caulk can let cold air in and is a common culprit in window drafts. If you\u2019re replacing the caulk yourself, be sure you\u2019re using a long-lasting silicone caulk, a caulking gun, and that you clear away all the old caulk, dust, and debris before applying new caulk. Read the package and ensure you give the caulk enough time to dry too.<\/p>\n

2. Inspect weatherstripping<\/h4>\n

Old, worn-out, damaged weatherstripping can let cold air in. To keep your home comfortable, ensure your weatherstripping isn\u2019t busted. Older windows might not have weatherstripping, or might have older, DIY weatherstripping that\u2019s misplaced.<\/p>\n

3. See any cracks?<\/h4>\n

Cracks in the windows can be obvious. Cracks around the windows can be harder to spot. If you still feel a draft around our windows but have ruled out the caulking and weatherstripping, a crack in the walls around the windows, or a warped window siding can lead to drafts and a colder home that\u2019s more expensive to heat.<\/p>\n
